Earlier, after KKR had gotten off to a strong start, Ravindra Jadeja struck a game-changing spell, dismissing Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi in one over.

When facing the Shreyas Iyer-led KKR, Ruturaj Gaikwad's CSK chose to bowl first. After losing Phil Salt off the opening ball, the visitors rallied, and Jadeja's over gave them a chance to regain the lead. Having finished with statistics of 3/18, he promptly dismissed Venkatesh Iyer as well. Maheesh Theekshana provided him with excellent support as CSK wove a web. With their cutters, Tushar Deshpande and Mustafizur Rahman were excellent in the final overs, keeping Rinku Singh and Andre Russell quiet.

Mustafizur's comeback gave CSK more strength, but the visitors remain unaltered. After rejoining his previous team, Shardul Thakur played his first match of the season (against another former team, KKR).

Despite suffering consecutive losses away from home, CSK maintained their unbeaten record at home.
